As a director, I believe that the script and story should inform how the camera is used. I do not believe in conceiving a shooting plan based on an urge to shoot decoratively. Instead, I like to formulate a blueprint from the point of view(s) of character(s). I create a trusting environment where actors can thrive. While maintaining a leadership role, I encourage a communal atmosphere that welcomes input from all crew members. I try to maintain a relaxed set filled with concentration. I am not fazed by limitations and challenging parameters, as I believe they help inspire creative and often better work. I believe in preparation. As Sydney Lumet said, “Preparation allows the ‘lucky accidents’ that we’re always hoping for to happen.” I am grateful that I love what I do.
